Grammar Help?

Out of all the trees that the town planted, the hawthorn was the only type that was an “understory” tree, that's why Melinda wanted hawthorns.

Grammar Help?
I'd say a fused sentence. There should be a semicolon before the last clause.
Reply:A comma splice occurs when two complete sentences are joined by a comma but no coordinating conjunction.

A fused sentence is like a comma splice without a comma; it's simply two sentences put together with no punctuation between them.

What's happening in your example? Or is it correct the way it is?
