Early American Literature Writers - views on censorship, privacy invasion, etc.?

Everyone probably knows all about all the recent (meaning within the past couple years) events about censorship (China, Media, etc.), people's rights, privacy (Wire tapping), the constitution, government checks and balances (Bush...), democracy and so on. Everyone probably has there own views on all these matters; but what do you think early writers of American Literature (Franklin, Jefferson, Paine, Melville, Sinclair, Crane, etc.) and authors for making oneself superior (Cooper, Poe, Emerson, Hawthorn, Twain, Hemmingway) who all argued for the democracy formed in the US would have to say about current events and how they have impacted us.
Early American Literature Writers - views on censorship, privacy invasion, etc.?
I think the writers mentioned in this question are turning over in their graves because of today's invasion of privacy, the perversion of our constitution, and the censorship imposed on our freedom to speak and write the truth about everything.
