Help with the novel "the scarlet letter", why did the society chang their view about the letter A?

First the society made Hester wear the A as a meaning of adultary, then when a metor in a shap of A falls from the sky, Dimmesdale believes its a reminder of sin, while the towns people believe its A for angel.

can you please explain why think of the letter A as something good. and what dose Hawthorn try to say with it?

thank you

They change their view to angel because the meteor falls after someone dies,so they believe he's become an angel.

Reply:They change their view because of Hester's actions. She dedicates her life to helping others as best as she can. The "A" goes from standing for "Adulterer" to "Able".
